37) Space is the Place

how was the planetarium? were you singing this in your galaxy? (i would be!)

(yes the video is incredibly cheesy but it was the best version of the song i could find.)

love the idea of your Saturday Morning Date with yourself, to discover things about the city you're in. the planetarium, the pier... sounds like a lot of fun! got anything special in mind for Our Saturday??

3600 Miles Away, Right Next to You

i got to thinking today. (weird, right?) this 'long-distance' relationship thing isn't so bad. geographically, we're on opposite sides of the country but i still feel as close to you as i can be without physically standing next to you. people always whine that long distance relationships "never work" or are "doomed", probably because they have trust issues. they either don't trust their partner or they don't trust themselves to stay virtuous during the separate times. in those situations, distance is just the scapegoat. but i say Balls to all that. even if i wasn't keeping vigil with this blogozine i'd be finding other ways to keep you in the forefront of my thoughts and daily loves.

life is pretty mundane right now and it hasn't been easy to stay inspired and to maintain health and wellness without someone to be inspired by, and to keep well, every day. you have no idea how vital you are to my art and creativity, though i know you feel as if it separates us from time to time. these have been long, dark wintry days for sure. yet i keep fires burning for you. sometimes i miss you so much i just wanna burn half of downtown to the ground, 'cuz it might provide a fraction of the warmth i feel from being the person you love.

maybe what makes this time apart easier to digest is that we know there's an end. at some point, we will reunite (and not just for a quick visit). this isn't a permanent thing. it's not like you're off to war. it's only a few more weeks. i can't wait to have you back. LA's been too lucky for too long, having you.

so to further lament about life being drab right now, a lovely drab number about a life not so exciting, by a woman who could barely sing.

35 Is He

that is, until Feb 1st, when Big Boi turns 36.

nothing too new to report. totally regular day. nothing out of the ordinary or particularly interesting about it. my work pants tore when i got caught on a cooler door handle. ripped right over the right pocket. oh well. guess i'll just have to start wearing those other black jeans that you hate. now i'm down to two pairs of not-work pants, and one pair work pants. still, i may keep the torn ones around and try to get to one of our seamstress friends sometime soon.

Tickets for Big Boi/Cee-Lo go on sale on Saturday, Jan 15, at 10am. this is the link.

make sure you're on that like stink on a pig. better yet, like pretty on your whole self. mm-hmm. here's a little motivation:

now i don't feel so bad about not going to Moogfest. we was gonna get another chance! hello, please!

34 What's Going on in L.A.?

for your next music run you asked me for bands that are playing in your area sometime soon. well, holy shit. how about this...

the Melvins are playing every Friday night in January at Club Spaceland.

yes, this is more my fare than yours, but i urge you to check it out... for me. they are awesome live, and if you stay away from the pit you should have a blast. this coming Friday they're doing the entire Houdini record, and in two weeks they're doing Stoner Witch. i would be there every week, if i could.

as of right now, Club Spaceland has no February listing other than their Friday night house band, which will be Har Mar Superstar. meh.

my next recommendation is Deerhoof @ the Echo, Sat. Jan 29
this should be a lot of fun, too. they are incredibly elastic and prolific. we really only know one record, and i would imagine you'd be lucky to hear much from it, but their latest album Deerhoof vs. Evil comes out this month, i think. from the couple songs i've heard, it's pretty freakin good. here, try one!

this is really all i could find, except for that one which i just texteded you about! wanna go?

33 Was He

feeling better yet?

how about now?

Blind Boy Fuller, (born Fulton Allen, Wadesboro, NC), 1907 - 1941. lost his sight in his teens. doctor told him he had "ulcers behind his eyes" that had probably been caused by "snow-blindness". that's Depression-era country medicine for you, huh? other accounts say a girlfriend tossed chemicals in his face during an argument, which lead to Fuller's blindness. either way, dude couldn't see. so he started playing guitar on the street and eventually was heard from somebody who took him to New York to record. his Wiki is worth a look..... seems like much of his repertoire was popular double entendre "hokum" songs, like Let Me Squeeze Your Lemon or I Want Some of Your Pie or, my personal favorite What's That Smells Like Fish? he was regarded as "good" more than "great" like some of his contemporaries; Charlie Patton, Blind Lemon Jefferson, etc. still i guess, judging by Wiki, he did alright.... eventually drinking himself to death by age 33. but he recorded and released over 150 sides of music, so his legacy is secure.

hey wanna see something cool?

hope yr feeling better tonight . see call me!

32 It's Snowing. Everybody Panic!

the entire town is shut down. no trash pickup, no school. i was gonna go to the bank this morning but the roads are all slush and ice. first thing i did this morning was write a big SLAYER on my windshield but the surrounding snow avalanched and wiped it out before i could get a photo.

today would be the perfect day if you were home, and we both had the day off. i could make you coffee and breakfast. we'd take a walk around the neighborhood. start a snowball fight with Chris and Emma. make a big dinner, maybe some hot toddies and a movie or two.... i really wish you were here. i miss sharing whole days with you. but soon soon we'll have some time time. (and the weather will be a lot nicer)

there is another occasion worth noting today, January 10. yes, it is the month-to-the-date anniversary of your departure/West Coast journey. but not only that, today would have been the 87th birthday of Maxwell Lemuel Roach, born Jan 10 1924 in the Township of Newland, North Carolina. one of (if not THE) greatest drummers of all time. of all the drummer/bandleaders (Blakey, Rich, Krupa), Roach had an artistry that was unparalleled. he wasn't just a powerful rhythmic force, he was a dynamic and tonal presence as well. and although his ensembles and compositions all carried his central voice/vision, it never felt as if it was All About Him.

but enough from me. in honor:

Max Roach 5 (feat Abbey Lincoln) - "Freedom Day"

and from a record i love more than coffee:

miss you both, babygirl.

31. Bill Pays the Williams

the williams are covering my piano. power, gas, web.... hah! power gas. best time to handle williams over the phone is on the john. nothing like Takin Care of Business while you're Takin Care of Business, am i right? got the Time Warner guy to drop a couple of bullshit fees while i was dropping some .. fill in your own doodoo rhyme here... it is appropriate, though. if you wanna get shit done, and get to the bottom of things, you just gotta roll up your sleeves, drop your trousers, call the Company and poop on 'em. the guy even asked me if i have access to a computer and i told him "yeah but i'm a little indisposed at the moment, give me a (BeBe's Kids pause to push) little more time"... made sure he heard me flush, too.

so i found this list of "notable" North Carolina natives. a few of interest are Pam Grier and Jackee Harry (both Winston-Salem), Carl Kassel my least favorite voice on NPR (Goldsboro), Julianne Moore (Fort Bragg, military brat), and Afeni Shakur (mother of Tupac, Lumberton)...

for music there isn't a lot that stands out to me. James Taylor, oh boy how exciting. Clay Aiken, Jermaine Dupri, Ben Folds. yawn. however, there are a couple pleasant surprises.

like George Clinton, born July 22, 1941, in Kannapolis, North Carolina. his Wiki says he grew up in NJ. (no doubt much of the funk came from there, but rooted in the south.) Clinton's no stranger to the williams, i'm sure. i liked Parliament a lot when i was a teenager, and still am more than a little aggro toward Dr Dre for co-opting Clinton's sound. but as an adult, i dig Funkadelic a lot more. it's more exploratory. Parliament is great pop music, Funkadelic is outstanding avant-funk, but still got all that mothership hip shake. stanky!

so i have to post my favorite track, the song i think would be the best intro music ever; for anyone, on any occasion.
