32 It's Snowing. Everybody Panic!

the entire town is shut down. no trash pickup, no school. i was gonna go to the bank this morning but the roads are all slush and ice. first thing i did this morning was write a big SLAYER on my windshield but the surrounding snow avalanched and wiped it out before i could get a photo.

today would be the perfect day if you were home, and we both had the day off. i could make you coffee and breakfast. we'd take a walk around the neighborhood. start a snowball fight with Chris and Emma. make a big dinner, maybe some hot toddies and a movie or two.... i really wish you were here. i miss sharing whole days with you. but soon soon we'll have some time time. (and the weather will be a lot nicer)

there is another occasion worth noting today, January 10. yes, it is the month-to-the-date anniversary of your departure/West Coast journey. but not only that, today would have been the 87th birthday of Maxwell Lemuel Roach, born Jan 10 1924 in the Township of Newland, North Carolina. one of (if not THE) greatest drummers of all time. of all the drummer/bandleaders (Blakey, Rich, Krupa), Roach had an artistry that was unparalleled. he wasn't just a powerful rhythmic force, he was a dynamic and tonal presence as well. and although his ensembles and compositions all carried his central voice/vision, it never felt as if it was All About Him.

but enough from me. in honor:

Max Roach 5 (feat Abbey Lincoln) - "Freedom Day"

and from a record i love more than coffee:

miss you both, babygirl.

LRV, b
